Electronic waste

Electronic waste is a growing problem globally, which is being fuelled by cheap electronics with a short replacement cycle.

  • According to the UN Global E-waste Monitor 2020, 53 million tonnes of e-waste was generated worldwide in 2019, up 21 per cent in just five years.
  • The report also predicts that global e-waste (discarded products with a battery or electrical plug) will reach 74 Mt by 2030 — almost a doubling of e-waste tonnage in just 16 years.
  • In 2019, only 17.4% of the world’s electronic waste was officially documented as formally collected and recycled.
